PUNTA ESPADA GREETS CHAMPIONS TOUR PLAYERS

Mark Wiebe

Bright sunshine and light breezes greeted the majority of Champions Tour players to kick off the third edition of The Cap Cana Championship. Arrivals include past champions Keith Fergus and Mark Wiebe, who claimed the 2009 title by holing a spectacular 95yd wedge shot at the 71st hole.

“Everybody enjoys coming here,” said Bruce Vaughan. “Look at the commitment sheet.  A lot of the top-30 are here, guys like the golf course. It’s a good field.”  Vaughan said, who played here each for the first two years. “This course is all dictated by the wind. If the wind does not blow you can shoot some good scores. If it does blow you have to play for the wind and then it becomes a guessing game.”

Sixteen major championship winners with twenty-five titles among them and five members of the World Golf Hall of Fame will participate this week. The 80 man field has 17 exempt players making their first appearance here.
